			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you know someone that has been trying to lose weight and get into shape, you have probably heard words such as, &#8220;I just eat one meal a day to lose weight&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;m afraid if I eat, I&#8217;ll gain weight&#8221; but sadly, this misnomer is why so many people are in the &#8220;battle of the bulge&#8221;. People all over the world still believe that eating breakfast, or even three meals a day will cause them to gain weight. In truth, as long as they are eating the right types of foods and exercising, then three normal meals or six small meals a day will actually work better with their metabolism than eating the wrong quantities or not eating often enough. </p>
<p>With more than half of Americans over the age of 20 now being considered &#8220;overweight&#8221;, now more than ever, we need to understand how metabolism works in relation to losing weight. Why risk having a heart attack, a stroke, developing cancer, or diabetes when all you have to do is make a few minor changes and live a healthy life? First, a person&#8217;s metabolic rate is determined by the number and size of respiring cells that compromise the body&#8217;s tissue, and the intensity of the metabolism in these cells. These two factors combined are what makeup the physiological foundation of the amount of energy (calories) in which a body uses. </p>
<p>Keep in mind that energy cannot be created or destroyed, just changed. As we know, potential energy comes from the foods we eat. When talking about weight loss, there are three components of balanced energy, which include calorie intake, calories stored, and calories expended. The way it works is that if the amount of calories taken in equals the amount of calories being expended (burned), then there is balance and the body&#8217;s weight is stable. </p>
<p>On the other hand, if the balance becomes positive, caused by more food being eaten than is burned, energy is destroyed or in better terms, stored as body fat. It is important to remember that you can be eating a diet considered low-fat and still gain weight. The reason is that most dietary fat is stored while the body is burning carbohydrates and proteins for energy. The problem is the when a person gains weight, the increased level of fat becomes stored energy until the calorie balance is negative. For that to happen, the amount of calories burned needs to exceed the number of calories being consumed, no matter what the macronutrient content. </p>
<p>Metabolism is the rate at which the body uses energy to support the basic functions essential to sustain life. This metabolism is comprised of three parts, which include physical activity (20%), Thermic Effect of Food, also called TEF (10%), and Resting Metabolism Rate or REM (70%). Physical activity is the amount of energy your body burns up during normal, daily activities to include housework, recreation, work, exercise, and so on. Obviously, someone that is physically active will burn more energy than a sedentary person will. TEF accounts for the energy used in digesting and absorbing nutrients, which would vary depending on the meal&#8217;s composition. When a person overeats, TEF is increased because more food must be digested. Here is where metabolism becomes very interesting and what causes so much confusion. </p>
<p>One pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so let us say a person consumes 3,500 more calories than normal. That individual would not gain one pound because the TED is accounted for but if 3,500 calories were cut trying to lose weight, then TEF decreases since there would be fewer nutrients to process. The result is that with energy expenditure would decrease, meaning that the individual would lose less than one pound in weight. In other words, by cutting out too much food, TEF cannot work as it was designed to do. Now keep in mind that you cannot go around eating a bunch of junk food. After all, the calories you do consume need to be healthy foods but what this does mean is that when you do not eat, you are actually working against your body in fighting weight gain, not the other way around. </p>
<p>Finally, the RMR refers to the number of calories the body needs to run its essential functions, as well as chemical reactions while in a rested state. This aspect of metabolism accounts for the greatest number of calories burned every day. What happens is that if lean weight should be lost because of increased protein metabolism, then RMR decreases. Typically, you would see this happen when a person goes on a very strict diet. In this situation, the body is forced into a negative nitrogen balance, which means a greater amount of protein is lost than what is replaced because of less protein/energy intake. When this imbalance occurs, there is a gradual loss of lean weight, which then lowers RMR. </p>
<p>What happens many times is that dieters will limit the amount of lean weight loss with intense exercise for the muscles to develop a need to maintain more protein. When this happens, the body is forced to use more energy from stored fats. If you want to put your metabolism to work for you, some simple steps can be taken: </p>
<p>* By adding a few extra pounds of lean muscle, the metabolic rate can be increased by up to 200% each day * Remember that lean weight can burn as much as 20 times more calories than fat weight * Regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost metabolism * By eating smaller meals and more often, you can boost your metabolism rate </p>
<p>While you need to eat healthy foods, studies prove that what matters most is how much of a person&#8217;s body weight is attributed to fat. Remember, excess fat is what links to major health problems. Therefore, it is important that you maintain a healthy weight but more crucial that you monitor the fat-to-muscle ratio. </p>
<p>For example, a woman standing 5&#8217;5&#8243; might weigh only 125 pounds but have a 27% body fat ratio, which is not good. This individual worked hard to diet, while staying involved with aerobics. However, much of what she lost was not fat, but muscle. Even though this weight would be considered ideal for her height, her body fat to muscle ratio is too high. </p>
<p>An excellent way to optimize your fat-to-muscle ratio is by getting involved with weight training in addition to the nutrition and cardio. Your anchors originated from extremely strong repetitive memory associations, which are triggered by your five senses of hearing, vision, smell, taste, and touch. You are constantly being anchored in different ways through out your life. For example, when you hear a certain song and it brings back a memory of a certain person, or a place in time, this is an audio anchor or an anchor triggered by your sense of hearing.</p>
<p>Have you ever met someone for the first time and noticed that something about them reminds you of someone or something else? This is a visual anchor or an anchor triggered by your sense of sight. Until now all of your anchors have been installed in your subconscious mind by someone else or by accident and in most cases you were not even aware of them. Now for the first time through the process of Burris MIND/FITNESS, you can learn how to anchor a reaction or behavior you want on purpose and consistently get the results you want over and over, until you are assured of attaining your weight goal.</p>
<p>It is important to understand that your subconscious mind can be triggered into a negative anchored behavior without even pausing to consider what it is doing. Sometime during this “No Thought Eating” binge your conscious mind awakens to what is taking place. You stop your eating binge and now along with feeling fearful, guilty, angry, or bored; you are also probably a little nauseous. The first thought that pops into your mind is: “Why Did I Eat That? I wasn’t even hungry!” How many times have you asked yourself this self-defeating negative question “Why Did I Eat That?”</p>
<p>The second you asked yourself this question, your subconscious mind is triggered into action to find an answer, which in turn produces a correlating picture. Surprise, surprise what did it find in your subconscious eating behavior program? It found you ate the cookies because you were feeling fearful, guilty, angry, or bored. Of course it did because that is exactly how you were programmed as a child to react to fear, guilt, anger, or boredom. Once again your subconscious mind will take this answer and the correlating picture of you being overweight and use it to anchor you even deeper to your childhood program.</p>
<p>Here is where the fun starts, what you have to do in order to change your existing negative anchored behaviors of “No Thought Eating?” You simply restructure your question from its negative form of “Why did I eat that?” to a positive form question of “How can I stop this no thought eating when I am feeling fearful, guilty, angry, or bored?” Your subconscious mind will now produce a positive answer to your new positive question such as: When you are feeling fearful, guilty, angry or bored, find an activity you enjoy in place of eating. Once again these new answers will produce empowering correlating pictures that will move you toward your weight goal. It is truly that simple, positive empowering questions = positive empowering results.<br />
From this time on, it is essential that you are always conscious of your inner voice, thereby insuring that all of your self-questions are positive ones and insuring that you always maintain a positive emotional state.</p>
<p>Regardless of weather your goal is a change in diet for weight loss, an increase in your fitness program or to take control of an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. In the end the question you need to ask yourself is…Am I completely happy with the mind running itself or do I need to take control of it? 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I know, you&#8217;re probably thinking you have to diet to lose weight. But nothing could be further from the truth. With rare exceptions, most people were born into normal weight bodies. But then we learned to diet. </p>
<p>Dieting causes the body to go into survival mode. Dieting itself sparks the intense biological urge to consume large quantities of high calorie foods.  It causes the body&#8217;s instinctual drives to override all intellectual controls. It primes the body to maximize food intake and minimize energy burned. </p>
<p>Diets have set us up to fight against our own physical survival, the body&#8217;s most basic instinct.  </p>
<p>As a comparison, think of how difficult life would be if you had to go to the bathroom on a rigid schedule. What if you only allowed yourself to urinate 3 times a day? </p>
<p>At 8 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. you could release exactly 5 ounces. You&#8217;d measure it &#8211; of course &#8211; to be sure it was the right amount. If you needed to go more, you would force yourself to wait until the next scheduled time. And too bad if you needed to go at 10 am, hold it until noon. </p>
<p>You would be miserable. Your body would have a very difficult time complying with an arbitrary schedule. It would probably get ugly.</p>
<p>Overeating because your body refuses to starve doesn&#8217;t make you a failure. It means you&#8217;re human.<br />
*It doesn&#8217;t make you diseased.<br />
*It doesn&#8217;t mean you are flawed forever.<br />
*It doesn&#8217;t doom you to being permanently sick and trying to recover for the rest of your life.<br />
*It means you did the best you could at the time.<br />
*It means you can forgive yourself and move on.</p>
<p>Eating is the most natural thing we do and your body knows exactly what it needs to live at it&#8217;s very best. All you have to do is practice listening and  ACT on the information. Your body knows what to do. Just as it knows how to breathe, reproduce, and heal. </p>
<p>Think of how children live, we can learn a lot from them…<br />
*They rest when they are tired.<br />
*They run, jump, swim, dance, and play as much as they can because it feels good and it&#8217;s fun.<br />
*They are picky about what they eat. They&#8217;ll go hungry rather than settle for something they don&#8217;t love.<br />
*They eat when they&#8217;re hungry.<br />
*Once they feel full, they have to be tricked or bribed into eating even one more bite of food.<br />
*They drink when they&#8217;re thirsty.<br />
*They love their bodies and they don&#8217;t care how their thighs look or if their tummy isn&#8217;t flat and tight.<br />
*They don&#8217;t have to think about all this. It just comes naturally and easily as a part of being human.</p>
<p>All of these natural instincts live in each of us, too. </p>
<p>We all have the inborn ability to take care of ourselves. We just have to remember. We just have to get back in the habit of listening to our bodies…of following their wisdom. Remember, a normal body weight is your birthright. It was stolen from you. Now you get to take it back. </p>
<p>So stop thinking of yourself as forever fat. You are not doomed to either being overweight or to being on a perpetual diet. Let overeating and overweight fade into the past. They served you well to keep you alive. Once you stop dieting and accept the body you were born with, you can return to your unique, normal weight. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m not suggesting everyone is going to be model-skinny. The endless, tyrannical pressure to be very thin is a big part of the problem. Some bodies are meant to be soft and curvy. Others are naturally sharp and angular. We are variously stocky, tall, fleshy, muscular, sinewy, short, etc. There is wonderful beauty in diversity.</p>
<p>Accepting and loving the unique beauty of your body will heal you and set you free. Be like a child and delight in the body you have. Cherish the power in your muscles. Enjoy the feeling of being alive here on this planet. Let go of having to look a certain way. Be yourself. Let someone else try to be like the models or celebrities. The world will be a better place if it gets to have the real, unique, special person that YOU are.</p>
<p>Believe in your own healing. Believe that you can live easily and naturally at your own ideal weight. That faith is a huge part of what will set you free. Eating normally is completely natural. Deep down you know how to do it.</p>

<p>Okay, let’s cut right to the chase for how Yoga for weight loss works.<br />
We’ve gone over the sun salutations and if you are anything like me, you probably tried them out and are sold on Yoga ‘the stretching’ exercise actually burning calories.</p>
<p>Now let’s target the trouble spots.</p>
<p>Poses for Trouble Spots when Using Yoga for Weight Loss:</p>
<p>1. Abdominal Region: The Forward Bending Pose, the Bow Pose, the Peacock Pose, the spinal twist and the Triangle Pose.</p>
<p>2. The Arms: Definitely the Peacock Pose! the Wheel Pose, the Crow Pose, the Side plank Pose and the 4-limb Staff Pose.</p>
<p>3. The Thighs: The Bow Pose, The Shoulder-Stand, the Hero Pose, the triangle and wheel poses.</p>
<p>4. Love Handles: The spinal twist, the triangle pose, (with practice) the Side Crow Poses, (for ease) The Side plank pose.</p>
<p>I realize the spots above are the ones most of us seem to target when trying to lose weight, so I have made sure to go over them first.</p>
<p>I’m under the impression that if you had searched in google or done some research on Yoga for weight loss, you must have gotten some degree of information on the poses above, or signed up for a class, bought a Yoga DVD, something to learn some more about it, which is why I did not go over each pose in detail. But trust me, they are indeed very easy. I will emphasize though, performing the Sun Salutations (upwards of 24 rounds) should be your main focus in using Yoga for a weight loss regimen, even before the other poses.</p>
<p>This too will help: One pose that some Yogis and Yoginis state to be a versatile enough pose for the whole body will be the Shoulder-Stand. It is best practiced with its counter poses, in fact, since these poses have effects on the meta-physical and spiritual aspects of our lives, it will be safe to say never execute a yoga pose without counter posing it. You may throw some things out of normalcy.</p>
<p>Here’s a brief overview on the Shoulder-stand as a yoga pose for weight loss:<br />
Spread a thick blanket on the floor and place your yoga mat on it. Lie on the back. Slowly raise the legs. Lift the trunk, hips and legs to a vertical position. Rest the elbows firmly on the floor and support the back with both hands. (See the Illustration for Proper Execution).  Raise the legs till they become vertical. Press the chin against the chest. This is the chin lock. While performing this pose, the back of the neck, the posterior part of the head and the shoulders should touch the floor. Breathe in counts of 5-5-5 (inhalation, retention and exhalation). Don’t allow the body to shake. Its counter poses are the bridge and fish poses which will target your forearms/thighs and chest/neck respectively.</p>
<p>As I promised; here is the Breath of Fire breathing exercise that you can add to your yoga practice to speed up the burning of calories. (Doesn’t the name alone tell you something…?)</p>
<p>Breath of Fire Exercise (aka Kapalabathi or Bellows Breath)</p>
<p>-Take a few breaths and see that the diaphragm is moving properly.  Now with the eyes closed (as they should be when performing all breathing exercises) make a sudden contraction of the abdomen with a backward push. This leads to a sudden yet firm expulsion of stagnant air from the lungs.</p>
<p>-Now follow this with a sudden relaxation (which naturally makes the new air rush in) now perform the exercise in this manner: passive inhalation and active expulsions at a rate of sudden abdominal push per second one after the other. A round should have 15-20 expulsions. Do not exceed 3 rounds</p>
<p>-You may gradually increase to 120 expulsions per round and then perform only 2 rounds. (As soon as you are doing 50 expulsions per round, do not exceed 2 rounds!) Between each round take a pause for about 30 seconds of normal breathing.</p>
<p>Now, there you have it, the information needed to get you started on the use of Yoga for weight loss: The poses for the trouble spots, the bellows breath, the shoulder-stand and the almighty Sun Salutations. </p>
<p>Remember, for the same reasons Hippocrates-the father of Medicine stated: “Let your foods be your medicine and your medicine your foods”, you’ve got to include a proper diet when seeking to lose weight with yoga. Keep in mind this is an all too important limb of this exercise so, there’s no way around it friends. (But I’m sure you know that already)</p>
<p>So strike a pose, and see for yourself how Yoga for weight loss can be an effective and safe choice.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Using yoga for weight loss might not look effective to most people. I bet you they’ll go: “Naw, it’s just stretching…what can it possibly do to burn calories?”<br />
Well, a lot my friend. Yoga can work for weight loss if you use it right and I’ll tell you what to do in due course.</p>
<p>“But how exactly can yoga work for weight loss Foras? (That’s my name by the way), ya’ll just stretching that’s it…!”</p>
<p>Boy, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that comment.</p>
<p>Well for interested parties, yoga as an option for weight loss is wise, safe and effective.<br />
Remember, it is the oldest physical culture known to man and not only does this exercise work the body, it works the mind and soul as well. Hey, have you seen Madonna, Sting or Russell Simmons lately? (I can just see you go: “Foras…they were never overweight so don’t go there! Well…they never gained weight either and they actually all still look good for there ages right? </p>
<p>Okay, here are the poses I recommend you use when using Yoga for weight loss.<br />
Now my friend, I will go over what I believe is the CORE of Yoga Poses.<br />
Trust me, there have been times when I did this alone and still got the benefits that yoga gives from daily practice. </p>
<p>Let’s take notes:</p>
<p>The Sun Salutations When using Yoga for Weight Loss:</p>
<p>These exercises are a combination of Yoga Poses, Breathing Exercises, Sun Bathing and Prayer. They have been practiced for centuries by Yoga Practitioners in India, Martial Artists and African Wrestlers and as a system to rejuvenate the body and soul are beyond compare. It’s been said in the Drugless Healing circles that one round of the Sun Salutations is much better than a week of exercises at the gym!</p>
<p>They are very simple to learn and just about anyone, regardless of their fitness or flexibility levels can learn these simple exercises. In actuality, if you are familiar with “burpies” (the calisthenics exercise), they do derive their origin from the Sun Salutations. </p>
<p>Here are some of their benefits:<br />
-They alleviate disorders of the skin and waist.<br />
-Flexibility increases and breathing is corrected, moreover, they mildly exercise the legs and arms, thus increasing the circulation.<br />
-They are the best way to burn calories and reduce weight and are often recommended for obesity and depression.<br />
-They are an effective way of loosening up, stretching and massaging all joints and internal organs of the body.<br />
-They stimulate and balance all the systems of the body including the endocrine, circulatory, reproductive and digestive system.</p>
<p>Technique:</p>
<p>1. Stand straight with the palms together as in a prayer position.</p>
<p>2. Inhale and stretch the arms above the head.</p>
<p>3. Exhale and bend forward while touching the toes.</p>
<p>4. Inhale and stretch the right leg away from the body in a big backward step and keep the hands and left foot firmly on the ground. Bending the head backward the left knee should be between the hands.</p>
<p>5. Inhale and hold the breath. Move the left leg from the body and, keeping both feet together and the knees of the floor, rest on the hands (arms straight) and keep the body in a straight line from head to foot.</p>
<p>6. Exhale and lower the body to the floor. In this position, only 8 portions of the body come in contact with the floor: the two feet, two knees, two hands, chest and forehead. </p>
<p>7. Inhale and bend back as much as possible bending the spine to the maximum.</p>
<p>8. Exhale and lift the body of the floor. Keep the feet and heels on the floor.</p>
<p>9. Inhale and bring the right foot along the level of the hands; left foot and knee should touch the ground. Look up, bending the spine slightly (same position as #4)</p>
<p>10. Exhale and bring the left leg forward. Keep the knees straight and bring the head down to the knees as in the third position.</p>
<p>11. Raise the arms overhead and bend backward inhaling. As in Position 2.</p>
<p>12. Exhale and drop the arms and relax.</p>
<p>You have now completed one round.</p>
<p>Perform as many rounds as possible in multiples of 3. Ideally you want to aim for 6 rounds minimum and up to a maximum of 30. It only takes about 5-10 minutes, depending on your speed and intensity and is best practiced with as little clothing as possible before an open air window first thing in the morning.</p>
<p>Okay, we’ve gone over the core pose or combination thereof when using Yoga for weight loss in this part of the series of this article. I’ll go over SPECIFIC poses (asanas) that will target the trouble spots and some breathing exercises that would speed up burning up of calories. But my friends, note, when I say use yoga for weight loss; I mean ALL its limbs: the poses, the prescribed diet for practice and mind-set. If you were doing conventional exercise for weight loss, you’d know to eat a healthier diet right…?<br />
Well the same applies to yoga for weight loss as well friends.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Motivation is one of the key variables for the equation that yields long term weight loss success. The question is how do you maintain the motivation to attain the ultimate goal? Regardless if your weight loss goal is 20 pounds or 100 pounds you must change your thinking to change your behavior and writing makes that happen.</p>
<p>Weight loss really does begin in your head. Every successful athlete understands that his thinking process is either working for him or against him. The same holds true with weight loss. If your internal dialogue is negative, your results will eventually manifest the same result! You can’t degrade yourself to a healthy new you! You must change your thinking to work for you, to build your resolve, and to maintain that all important motivational factor.</p>
<p>Writing is an exercise that will help your mind change its thinking! It allows you to process the negative emotions and helps to instill the positive changes. Start with these simple exercises:</p>
<p>1. The Negative Emotions Daily Dump: Many success coaches advocate writing out your negative thinking on a daily basis. Simply spend approximately 15 minutes writing out all the frustrations, bad feelings, and discouragement. This helps you to process these bad feelings out of your system so that you can make room for positive affirmations. Do not reread the entries and do not keep them. Write it out, and then throw it out. We call this the Negative Emotions Daily Dump.</p>
<p>2. Affirm Your Goals: Prepare a list of affirmations that will help your subconscious work with your conscious brain to make those all important behavioral changes. Then write your affirmations at least twice a day. Write them once after you have written your Negative Emotions Daily Dump. Don’t do the Negative Dump without filling it with the positive affirmations. You should always end with this. Write the second set of affirmations either right before you go to bed or first thing in the morning. Read your affirmations several times a day.</p>
<p>3. Understand your Motivations: In order to stay motivated you must understand your real reasons for losing weight. In other words, understand why YOU want to lose weight. Not why your spouse or friends want you to lose weight but why losing the weight is important to you. Do you really want more energy? Do you just love skinny clothes? Do you want to participate in an activity that would be easier if you were slim and healthy? Write these motivations out in detail so that you can solidify them in your head and they can continue to motivate you through the entire weight loss journey.</p>
<p>4. Accountability: Keep a food diary. Keeping a food diary has been proven time and time again to increase your weight loss success by as much as 50%! A food log is your accountability factor. It keeps you honest with yourself.</p>
<p>5. Visualize: Visualize yourself enjoying the portions of your weight loss program that you are currently struggling to do. For instance if you hate the cardio portion of your day, start seeing yourself loving it. See it as “”your time”. It can be your time to read while you’re on the stationary bike. Or your time to watch all those movies you feel guilty watching any other time. Once you begin to visualize positive feelings about a certain activity the easier that activity will become.</p>
<p>6. The Pat-On-The-Back: Keep a written log of your weight loss success. By writing down your weight loss on a weekly basis you are validating your efforts and giving yourself a pat-on-the-back. This will go a long way to keeping you on track.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that if you are utilizing the assistance of a personal fitness trainer or weight loss professional that they may use techniques to help you face your self-defeating habits. This might feel harsh and negative, however it isn’t. Honesty is necessary to motivate change and this is different than running yourself down! Sometimes we have to hear the hard words to make the hard changes. Keep in mind that these professionals are seeking your ultimate success. Your success is their success. Let’s face it, the weight gain started with you and to change that behavior you may have to deal with some uncomfortable feelings. A good trainer will help you feel cared about while still insisting that you deal with your bad habits. It’s a good thing to be pushed past your comfort zone to becoming a better you!</p>
<p>Writing is the new “exercise” that can make all the rest of your weight loss efforts including good nutrition, exercise, and resistance training work for you because you will be working with these principles instead of against them. You will start seeing these weight loss techniques as a positive and permanent part of your life, instead of a temporary device. That will result in faster results that last forever!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jennifer, a middle-aged single mother with one six-year-old daughter, has been skipping sweets for a few weeks now.  She’s also become a stickler for portion control.  She feels as if she’s eating less than ever, and she’s been diligently exercising for an hour at a time at least four days a week.  Yet, she hasn’t lost a single pound.  The question is, “Why?”</p>
<p>       This is a dilemma which affects dieters the world over.  They think they are taking the steps necessary to lose weight, but nothing seems to be happening.  In essence, they are trapped in a dieting rut and they don’t know how to free themselves.  As a result, they become frustrated and depressed and may then engage in binge eating.</p>
<p>       One of the problems with diets is that they are often standardized.  As a result, they don’t take into consideration your individual physiology and metabolism.  They provide a cookie-cutter approach to weight loss—an approach which may not work in your individual case.  As a result, an increasing number of people are turning to dieticians to formulate a person weight loss strategy for them.  This process has been made easier through the Internet, where you can correspond with a dietician any time of the day or night via e-mail.  The dietician can also act as your personal coach, helping you through your dieting dilemmas.</p>
<p>        Another reason that you may be failing at your diet is because of a lack of support.  You may have family members who can eat whatever they want and seemingly not gain a pound. By taking a few simple steps, such as eliminating the exotic coffee drinks from your diet and substituting skim milk for whole milk, you may be able to eliminate the hidden calories that are denying you dieting success.</p>
<p>         Lack of consistency can also be a diet-killer.  You might go on a diet for a while, then quit before you’ve made any measurable progress.  It’s only natural to want to see quick results.  The problem is that healthy weight loss involves losing only a couple of pounds a week.  That means you’ll have to stay on your diet for months before you see appreciable weight loss.  Discouraging?  It can be, but if you keep a positive attitude you can achieve your ideal weight.</p>
<p>        You may also be more successful in your dieting if you consider it to be a lifestyle change.  Therefore, your diet becomes a meal plan for life.  This means that you must change the way you look at food.  It is designed to be fuel for your body, and nothing more.  As a result, you should not turn to food to make you feel better or to provide you with a sense of comfort.  A lifestyle change implies commitment; it means that you are prepared to follow the plan for the long haul.  If you feel as if you cannot be on your diet for any appreciable length of time, perhaps it’s time to consider a different diet.   Your aim ultimately should be not simply to lose weight, but to become healthier.  A fad diet will not allow you to reach that milestone.   Therefore, you must choose your diet carefully.</p>

<p>Gastric bypass surgery is highly effective. Reductions of 80 per cent of excess weight in the first year are common. On average, a patient will lose up to three quarters of his excess weight in the two years following gastric bypass surgery. But the benefits will come far quicker, especially if you suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure. Your physical condition will improve and along with it, your self-confidence.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s more it&#8217;s relatively safe. The procedure can be carried out using laporoscopic (keyhole) or open surgery. However, like any form of surgery it comes with its own risks. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you tried to lose weight after 30? Wasn’t that more difficult than ever before? Guess what? It’s even more difficult after 40! Have you ever wondered why your body reacts differently to the same regimes you apply in different stages of your life?</p>
<p>People that have never had a weight problem get flabbier after 30 without clear explanation. They start exercising and they don’t see any improvement. They eat less, and they still don’t achieve any significant change. What they don’t take into consideration is the aging impact on their body.</p>
<p>Aging is a Reason for Gaining Weight and the Obstacle to Losing Weight<br />
There are more than 20 theories about aging but the most researched one is the “Free Radicals” theory.  Free radicals are atoms or molecules in which at least one electron is unpaired causing an instability (a stable atom contains a balance of paired electrons which encircle the nucleus). </p>
<p>This instability causes the electrons to be very reactive – they bond easily with healthy molecules and damage them. According to the free radicals theory, this damage is what causes you to age and to become vulnerable to certain diseases.</p>
<p>The most common free radical is an oxygen radical, which occurs in the mitochondria when an unpaired electron interacts with oxygen. Mitochondria are your cellular power plants, the tiny structures in your cells that provide energy in the chemical form of ATP.  This is your “fuel” for all your life functions. It helps your heart to pump and your lungs to distribute oxygen when you breathe. </p>
<p>When free radicals are formed in the mitochondria, they reduce the power of your cellular power plants to produce energy efficiently. You are not running out of energy because you’re aging. You are aging because you are running out of energy. Free radicals gradually shut down your power as if you are slowly turning off a light dimmer. </p>
<p>Free Radicals and Energy Reduction are the Roots of Most Aging Problems<br />
Without energy your metabolic rate drops causing you to accumulate more body fat. You are losing muscle mass, bone mass, facial collagen and you are tired even when you have over-slept. </p>
<p>Energy reduction at the cellular level also decreases the hormone secretion in your glands. The most abundant hormone in the body is DHEA. It is known as the “mother of all hormones” because it is involved in manufacturing of other hormones, especially the sexual hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. </p>
<p>DHEA peeks at the age of 20 but afterwards declines sharply so at age 45 you have 50% of your high peek DHEA, and at the age of 65 you have only 10-20% of what you had at age 20. As the mother of all hormones DHEA represents a decline in other hormones as Human Growth Hormone, (HGH), Testosterone (in men), estrogen and progesterone (in women). </p>
<p>Studies show that as lower your hormone level is, as higher your tendency to accumulate fat. </p>
<p>Weight gain after 30 is a result of a vicious cycle of aging. Aggressive free-radicals decrease energy production which decreases hormone level and your metabolic rate to levels that most diets cannot help.</p>
<p>Anti-Aging Can Support Weight Loss by Neutralizing Free-Radicals<br />
The most common way to fight free radicals is by increasing significantly antioxidants in your body. Your body produces antioxidants naturally or it gets it from food like fruit and vegetables. </p>
<p>Antioxidants are form of enzymes that attack free radicals by attaching to the unpaired electron and neutralize it. There are 2 kinds of antioxidants:</p>
<p>The first type patrols the body, blocking the formation of free radicals.<br />
The second type disarms the already existing free radical before they bind with healthy molecules. </p>

<p>So why can&#8217;t you lose weight? Here are 3 possible reasons you may not be losing weight &#8211; and some suggestions on what you can do about it. </p>
<p>#1) Medical Reasons </p>
<p>Now this is not the same as saying you&#8217;re genetically programmed to be overweight. That is hogwash. In fact scientists estimate that even if you do have a genetic propensity to gain weight, your genes only account for 15 &#8211; 25% of your current weight. So forget the genetics excuse. </p>
<p>But there are medical reasons that some people can&#8217;t lose weight. Low thyroid, adrenal exhaustion, insulin resistance and other medical conditions can make losing weight near to impossible.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why before starting any weight loss plan, you should talk to your doctor first. Have a full workup and make sure that you don&#8217;t have any health issues standing in the way of your weight loss. </p>
<p>There&#8217;s nothing more frustrating that trying to lose weight, doing all the right things and not losing an inch &#8211; all because of a medical condition. Get the medical condition cleared up first and then address the weight (in fact, the weight may just go down on it&#8217;s own once you get the medical condition addressed).</p>
<p>#2) Emotional Eating </p>
<p>I recently read an article where a nutritionist estimated that 75% of overeating was due to emotions. 75%! Can you imagine what would happen if you learned to eliminate emotional eating and cut out all those calories? What a weight loss impact! The weight would be falling off.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, in today&#8217;s world, emotional eating is on the rise. Most people today are feeling the pressure of an increasingly hectic lifestyle. We hardly have time to tie our shoes, never mind deal with our emotions. </p>
<p>Because of this, our emotions get stuffed down and ignored until finally they explode and we&#8217;re face-down in a bowl of Rocky-Road ice cream with extra chocolate sauce. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the bottom line: you are human and you have emotions. Your emotional needs are important and need to be addressed properly with love. You need emotional nurturing and proper emotional care. </p>
<p>If that means you take a 5 minute break every few hours at work to regain your emotional balance, do it. If that means you need to unwind by doing a mall walk and window shopping after work &#8211; don&#8217;t let anything stop you. </p>
<p>Learn to nurture your emotional health and you&#8217;ll nip emotional eating in the bud &#8211; and start losing weight FAST.</p>
<p>#3) Mismatched Weight Loss Plan </p>
<p>There are many different ways to lose weight and dozens of weight loss programs to choose from. Some plans emphasize a change in diet, others emphasize a change in exercise, others focus on the inner reasons for overeating. </p>
<p>Every person is different and will lose weight in their own unique way. If what you&#8217;re doing now isn&#8217;t currently working, it may be a simple case of personality-plan mismatch. </p>
<p>Maybe instead of a diet-focused weight loss plan, you would feel better with a fitness-focused weight loss plan or a psychological weight loss plan. There are lots of plans to choose from and you deserve to take your time and find one that fits your personality and lifestyle best. </p>
<p>If you think this is the case, take some time to review different diet or weight loss plans. Find one that you can get excited about, one that makes sense to you and that fits your belief system and personality. That&#8217;s when you&#8217;ll make real weight loss progress!</p>

<p>How Overweight Is America? </p>
<p>How serious is obesity in America? According to Kathleen Donnelly for MSN Health &amp; Fitness, statistics show that “…60 percent of adult Americans weigh too much, and 17 percent of American children and teens are overweight.”<br />
And the problem continues to escalate. In the past thirty years, children in the USA are increasingly tipping the scales. The rise of obesity among children between the ages of 6 and 11 has gone from 4% to 13 % in three decades. Obesity in US children ages 12 to 19 has gone from 5% to 14%.   And if a child is obese at the age of 6, it has a 50/50 chance of being obese for life. Obese thirteen year olds have a 75% likelihood of being obese for the rest of their lives.  This problem is even more severe among blacks and Hispanics.  </p>
<p>To remedy their plight, 103,000 morbidly obese Americans living in the United States had gastric bypass surgery in 2003. The complication rate was 7%. </p>
<p>What causes obesity?   </p>
<p>Several causes for obesity have been suggested, including heredity, social-economic conditions, diet, and exercise. Since we can’t control who our parents are, let’s focus on social-economic conditions, diet, and exercise.<br />
Obesity &amp; Social-economic conditions<br />
Numerous studies have concluded that there is a direct cause and effect relationship between a person’s level of education and their odds of being overweight. The greater their level of learning is, the slimmer their odds of obesity are. </p>
<p>Dysfunctional Diets, Inadequate Exercise, and Bulging Belt-lines</p>
<p>Of course, two obvious causes of obesity are dysfunctional diets and a lack of proper exercise. Americans are exercising less and less while simultaneously consuming too much junk food. The average US woman is now consuming 335 more calories per day than the average woman in 1971. Calorie intake among men has increased to an additional 168 calories per day.  Is it any wonder that America is increasingly becoming an obese nation? </p>
<p>Health Risks Associated with Obesity</p>
<p>Discomfort about one’s appearance, however, is not the only downside to obesity. There are numerous health risks associated with being overweight. Obese individuals have a higher-than-normal rate of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high lipids, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, strokes, respiratory disease, some types of cancers, heart disease, and other chronic and deadly conditions.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts obesity will soon be America’s number one killer. In 2000, tobacco was linked to 435,000 deaths while obesity was close behind at 400,000 deaths.  </p>
<p>What to Do About Obesity</p>
<p>There are primarily three things that most experts recommend to help maintain a healthy weight level: 1) Getting the proper amount of exercise, 2) eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, and 3) supplementing one’s diet with nutritional products. </p>

<p>Water is an essential ingredient for your weight loss. Water is required for a whole range of the body&#8217;s biochemical processes, so lets look at what water does specially for dieters:</p>
<p>Your body needs to metabolize stored fat into energy &#8211; so much so, that your body&#8217;s metabolism can be slowed by even mild levels of dehydration. And the slower your metabolism, the slower your weight loss (and you become tired), until eventually your weight loss just grinds to a halt! You now have just hit the dreaded diet plateau.</p>

In the hypothalamus, a region in your brain that controls appetites and cravings, the control centers for hunger and thirst are situated next to each other, and there tends to be some overlap. This has both advantages and disadvantages for the dieter. On the flip side, it means that chronic mild dehydration can confuse these mechanisms, leading to feelings of hunger, rather than thirst. But on a positive note, it means you can use water to reduce your appetite. For example, in one University of Washington study, drinking a glass of water reduced nighttime hunger cravings for most of the dieters studied. I have also found this to be true.</p>
<p>Water is an essential to the processes that enables your muscles to contract. So water helps maintain muscle tone. Better muscle tone means a better looking body, and isn&#8217;t that what dieting and weight loss is about?</p>
<p>There&#8217;s help for that sagging skin. Water also helps to prevent the sagging skin that often follows weight loss &#8211; water plumps the skin cells, giving the skin a younger and healthier look.</p>
<p>Water helps rid the body of waste. During weight loss, the body has a lots of waste to get rid of because of all that fat. So enough water is essential to your health while dieting.</p>
<p>Water also helps with constipation. When the body gets too little water, it siphons what it needs from within, particularly from the colon. This leads to constipation. But normal bowel function almost always returns with adequate water intake.</p>
<p>Generally speaking, mild dehydration can cause a number of health problems, in addition to your diet plateau. The symptoms of mild dehydration can include:</p>
<p>- Headaches; that light headed feeling as dehydration interferes with normal body processes, including waste disposal.<br />
- Fatigue, as the body&#8217;s metabolism is slowed &#8211; mild dehydration is usually the most common cause of daytime fatigue.<br />
- Hunger; cravings due to weakening of the thirst mechanism<br />
- Fluid retention as your body tries to hold on to the water it already has<br />
- Constipation, as the body works to conserve its internal water sources</p>
<p>Not a pretty picture but once you get your water in balance, you reach the &#8220;breakthrough point&#8221;, a concept pioneered by Dr. Peter Lindner, a California obesity expert. He says, &#8220;Once you&#8217;ve reached the breakthrough point, fluid retention eases, the liver and endocrine system start to function more effectively, you will start to regain your natural thirst and your hunger cravings will be significantly reduced. And so the end result of reaching and sustaining the breakthrough point in your water balance is that your body is able to metabolize fat more effectively.&#8221;</p>
<p>How much water should you drink daily to be healthy&#8217; First, a couple of basic principles:</p>
<p>1) The simplest way to tell if you are drinking enough water is check the color of your urine: It should be clear or a very pale yellow in color. (but note that some supplements and medications may also affect your urine color).</p>
<p>2) Get in to the habit of drinking regular and adequate amounts of water. Never wait to drink until you&#8217;re thirsty, because if you&#8217;re feeling thirsty, dehydration has already set in!</p>
<p>Having said that, an adequate water intake for a sedentary but normal-weight adult during cool weather, is generally recognized as 8 x 8 oz glasses. You will need more water in hot weather, when you lose more water through sweat. You also need to drink more water when you exercise. Athletes attempt to enhance their performance by maintaining an optimal fluid balance while exercising, estimated to require 6 to 12 oz of fluid at 15 to 20 minute intervals. Even if you&#8217;re not concerned about your athletic performance, you should consume a similar amount of water when exercising, in order to maintain adequate hydration.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another important thing to remember; if you&#8217;re overweight, you&#8217;ll need an extra glass of water for each 25 pounds overweight, because the extra weight creates extra metabolic demand.</p>
<p>How can you drink so much water&#8217; Weight loss experts secrets say drink 3 glasses of water with every meal. That&#8217;s 3 glasses with breakfast, 3 with lunch, and 3 with dinner. Plus, of course, additional regular water between meals when you&#8217;re exercising or when its hot. That sure makes it doable, doesn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>So if you&#8217;re dieting, stalled on a weight loss plateau, or suffering some of the classic symptoms of dehydration, do, above everything else, be sure that you have an adequate water intake. It could be the missing ingredient in your diet regime and as easy to fix as drinking 3 glasses of water with each meal.</p>
<p>Remember that water is a natural appetitie suppressant. Use it to your advantage. If you&#8217;re out shopping, take a bottle of water with you. If you feel like a late night snack, either go to bed or drink a glass of water. If you want a change, add a little bit of lemon juice into a glass of water. I find, instantly, my desire to eat is gone. Give it a try.</p>

For numerous individuals, New Year’s resolutions will involve vows to cut back on their food intake, get on a diet and exercise regimen and drop at least a few pounds. The question that hangs in the air for those who are anticipating the start of a new diet lies in exactly which diet might happen to be right for them and which diet holds the key to helping them lose the most weight. </p>
<p>Certainly, there are numerous diets available and it seems like every few months a new diet or eating plan has emerged to become the new successful diet rage. Is it possible that all the ‘popular’ diets can help you lose weight or are there certain diets that can help you lose more weight than others? </p>
<p>This is the question that a group of researchers set out to answer recently. Over a period of two months, 160 individuals were monitored closely as they followed a supervised program. The varying factor among all 160 program participants was that they were allowed to choose whichever diet suited their fancy. Researchers waited and watched in anticipation to learn which diet or diets would prove to be most successful. </p>
<p>What they learned at the conclusion of the study proved to be quite interesting. The data they collected not only helped them to learn more about which diet programs tend to be more successful in terms of total weight loss but also which diet programs more individuals were more likely to stick with for long term weight loss and maintenance. </p>
<p>While the study participants were allowed to choose their favorite diet plan, most participants opted for one of the following: Atkins, Weight Loss, Ornish and the Zone. Even though initial data was conducted after just two months, researchers continued to study the remaining participants. They discovered that after a period of time more than half of those participants who opted for diet plans that focused on low carbs and high fat, such as the Atkins plan, dropped out. Additionally, approximately the same percentage of individuals who chose the Ornish plan, which focuses on low fat and high carb vegetarian foods, also quit their diets. Weight Watchers participants fared moderately better, with about two-thirds of that group’s participants sticking with it. The Zone participants showed similar results. </p>
<p>So, which diet plans performed best overall in terms of total weight loss? Surprisingly, they all performed about the same. Those individuals participating in the Ornish plan who were able to stick with their diet for the entire year achieved a weight loss rate of about 6%; the highest of all groups. Atkins came in at about 4%, with Weight Watchers and the Zone performing at an average of 5% weight loss. Health risk factors related to obesity were an entirely different matter; however. In terms of heart disease risk, Weight Watchers participants decreased their risk by 15%, while other diet plans hovered in the 12% range. The Ornish diet plan participants, who showed a higher overall weight loss, showed a lower decrease in risk of heart disease, at just 7%. </p>
<p>Overall; however, researchers concluded that in the end, there is no one magic diet. If you’re planning to resolve to lose weight in the New Year, your best strategy is still the same regardless of which diet plan you ultimately choose. Eat sensibly, cut back on portions, drink plenty of water, participate in a moderate exercise routine and find a diet buddy to support you in your weight loss goals.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the old year comes to a close and everyone begins to look forward to the beginning of a New Year, many people are also anticipating the beginning of their New Year’s resolutions. For numerous individuals, New Year’s resolutions will involve vows to cut back on their food intake, get on a diet and exercise regimen and drop at least a few pounds. The question that hangs in the air for those who are anticipating the start of a new diet lies in exactly which diet might happen to be right for them and which diet holds the key to helping them lose the most weight. </p>
<p>Certainly, there are numerous diets available and it seems like every few months a new diet or eating plan has emerged to become the new successful diet rage. Is it possible that all the ‘popular’ diets can help you lose weight or are there certain diets that can help you lose more weight than others? </p>
<p>This is the question that a group of researchers set out to answer recently. Over a period of two months, 160 individuals were monitored closely as they followed a supervised program. The varying factor among all 160 program participants was that they were allowed to choose whichever diet suited their fancy. Researchers waited and watched in anticipation to learn which diet or diets would prove to be most successful. </p>
<p>What they learned at the conclusion of the study proved to be quite interesting. The data they collected not only helped them to learn more about which diet programs tend to be more successful in terms of total weight loss but also which diet programs more individuals were more likely to stick with for long term weight loss and maintenance. </p>
<p>While the study participants were allowed to choose their favorite diet plan, most participants opted for one of the following: Atkins, Weight Loss, Ornish and the Zone. Even though initial data was conducted after just two months, researchers continued to study the remaining participants. They discovered that after a period of time more than half of those participants who opted for diet plans that focused on low carbs and high fat, such as the Atkins plan, dropped out. Additionally, approximately the same percentage of individuals who chose the Ornish plan, which focuses on low fat and high carb vegetarian foods, also quit their diets. Weight Watchers participants fared moderately better, with about two-thirds of that group’s participants sticking with it. The Zone participants showed similar results. </p>
<p>So, which diet plans performed best overall in terms of total weight loss? Surprisingly, they all performed about the same. Those individuals participating in the Ornish plan who were able to stick with their diet for the entire year achieved a weight loss rate of about 6%; the highest of all groups. Atkins came in at about 4%, with Weight Watchers and the Zone performing at an average of 5% weight loss. Health risk factors related to obesity were an entirely different matter; however. In terms of heart disease risk, Weight Watchers participants decreased their risk by 15%, while other diet plans hovered in the 12% range. The Ornish diet plan participants, who showed a higher overall weight loss, showed a lower decrease in risk of heart disease, at just 7%. </p>
<p>Overall; however, researchers concluded that in the end, there is no one magic diet. If you’re planning to resolve to lose weight in the New Year, your best strategy is still the same regardless of which diet plan you ultimately choose. Eat sensibly, cut back on portions, drink plenty of water, participate in a moderate exercise routine and find a diet buddy to support you in your weight loss goals.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everybody knows that calories are the enemy, and that more calories equals more weight gained. Therefore, most people believe that losing weight is as simple as cutting way back on calories.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s just simple mathematics, right?</p>
<p>After all, if you&#8217;re eating 3,000 calories per day and you cut back to 1,000 calories per day, then those extra 2,000 calories have to be burned from your body, right?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s as simple as 2 + 2 equals 4, right? Well, this is not exactly true.</p>
<p>First, let&#8217;s talk about the average person who begins a diet. The scenario usually goes something like this&#8230;</p>
<p>One day you look in the mirror and you finally get fed up with the way your body looks (or the way that your clothes fit) &#8211; and on this day you get &#8220;angry&#8221; with yourself, and you begin cutting way back on calories in an attempt to starve yourself thinner.</p>
<p>So you officially begin your &#8220;starvation diet.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the first day you skip breakfast altogether (after all, you&#8217;re so filled with anger and motivation that it&#8217;s easy to skip breakfast).</p>
<p>Then, a few hours later your motivation quickly gives way to severe hunger &#8211; since your body is not accustomed to being without calories for so long.</p>
<p>Finally, by lunchtime you&#8217;re so hungry that you feel weak and miserable, but yet you tell yourself that you can make it through this tough hunger (after all, you don&#8217;t want to look like a quitter to your friends and family who know that you&#8217;re dieting).</p>
<p>So you have a small piece of fruit for lunch perhaps, bravely trying to stick to your plan of starving yourself thin.</p>
<p>Then, hours later when dinnertime arrives you&#8217;re so hungry and weak that you have a big migraine headache &#8211; and you&#8217;re beginning to realize that starving yourself might not be such a good idea after all.</p>
<p>However, you try to hold out for another day or two on this miserable diet &#8211; since nobody likes to feel like a quitter.</p>
<p>So you&#8217;ll probably hold out for another day or two, making yourself miserable in the meantime.</p>
<p>There are even some brave dieters who may hold out for a week or so, possibly even 2 weeks for the bravest of dieters.</p>
<p>However, regardless of how long you hold out &#8212; the result is still the same.</p>
<p>You see, even after 2 weeks of starving you won&#8217;t have made any noticeable difference to your body when you look in the mirror.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Simple, because the weight lost during a starvation diet is largely water weight, not real weight loss. This water weight will be gained back immediately when you stop dieting and begin eating normally again.</p>
<p>Also, when you starve yourself your body begins burning fewer calories each day &#8212; so even though you&#8217;re eating fewer calories each day you must remember that your body is also burning fewer calories.</p>
<p>For example, let&#8217;s say that you normally eat 2,500 calories per day (before you begin dieting). Then, you suddenly try to starve yourself by eating only 1,000 calories per day.</p>
<p>Guess what?</p>
<p>Even though you&#8217;re eating 1,500 fewer calories per day your body will begin burning 1,500 fewer calories per day &#8211; so your weight will remain the same even though you&#8217;re starving yourself.</p>
<p>When your body begins burning fewer calories it&#8217;s called a weight loss &#8220;plateau.&#8221; This is why virtually all starvation dieters cannot make the scale go down after about 2 weeks of dieting.</p>
<p>This is why even the most determined of &#8220;starvation dieters&#8221; always fail after just a couple of weeks.</p>
<p>The truth is that &#8220;noticeable&#8221; weight loss simply cannot be achieved by starvation, and it&#8217;s pointless to even try that type of diet.</p>
<p>True weight loss can only be achieved by giving your body the right types of calories at the right times each day. Your body is like a big engine, and the truth is that it needs all 3 types of calories (protein, carbs, and fat) to some degree.</p>
<p>The best way to lose weight is to effectively manage these 3 types of calories, so that your body receives the proper amount of protein, the proper amount of carbs &#8211; and also the proper amount of fat each day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You may not realize it, but there is a certain psychology at work in successful weight loss.  It is no surprise, then, that the magazine Psychology Today has explored the issue in-depth.  In October of 2004, the magazine posted an article on its website detailing the experiences of Diane Berry, a nurse practitioner who studied women who had shed at least 15 pounds and had maintained their weight loss for an average of seven years.  </p>
<p>The women shared some important things in common.  For instance, they all achieved their weight loss through either Weight Watchers or TOPS, which meant that they had a firm support network as they tried to maintain their weight.  The group meetings were highly important, because they learned to recognize that they were certainly not alone in their struggles with weight.   The women were also quite unusual because up to 90 percent of individuals who have lost weight end up putting it back on within five years.   </p>
<p>Another common trait of these women is that they appeared to undergo a profound mood shift as they made the transition from fat to thin.  From all indications, they appeared to be depressed when they were heavy but, as they attempted to lose weight, their mood brightened.  </p>
<p>For these women, healthy eating became a habit—a habit they refused to break.  They themselves recognized the tremendous role that psychology plays in weight loss.  They refused to give in to negative feelings of frustration and denial and chose a positive path instead.  The women also made it a point to weigh themselves regularly so that they could chart their progress.</p>
<p>And they recognized that maintaining weight loss would be a lifetime struggle.  They knew that they could not attempt a weight loss program then put it back on the shelf.  They had to learn new eating patterns that they could continue week in and week out.  In some cases, they likened their struggle to that of an alcoholic.  In other words, they recognized the gravity of their problem and took steps to correct the situation.  </p>
<p>Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these women’s experiences was the fact that their weight loss actually came in spurts.  At times, they regained their weight, but they did not let that deter them from their final goal.  They simply viewed their setbacks as challenges that they needed to overcome.  This may be the key psychological trait that separates successful dieters from unsuccessful ones—perseverance.   In essence, these women were able to change their personalities in a positive way in order to achieve their long-term weight loss goals. </p>
<p>Another interesting aspect of this study was that it showed that the women who had undergone weight loss transformation were genuinely happy.  This shows the tremendous psychological impact that weight loss can have on an individual.  Once an individual is free from the burden of extra weight, he or she is better able to meet the challenges of life head-on.  The dieter benefits from positive reinforcement, as relatives, friends, and co-workers congratulate him or her for the weight loss.  In this way, losing weight can be quite a life-affirming experience and can lead to a more optimistic outlook on life.</p>
<p>It must be noted here that the psychology of weight loss is a complicated matter.  There is no single ingredient that can turn a fat person into a thin one.  However, recognizing that there is a psychological component to successful weight loss may, in fact, be half the battle.  Once an individual recognizes that he or she is engaged in a psychological fight, he or she is better able to do battle.  By retraining oneself to seek healthy approaches to diet, one can, in effect, mold oneself into a new individual—one that no longer lives to eat, but simply eats to live.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re a yo-yo dieter, you probably have a history of swinging between very restrictive diets and then returning to &#8216;normal&#8217; eating once you&#8217;ve lost the weight that you need to lose. You&#8217;ve proved that you have willpower now what you need is re-education. Instead of choosing a strict regimen that you&#8217;ll abandon when the diet is done, commit to following the recommendations for healthy eating from the USDA, and add half an hour of exercise to your daily routing five times a week. You&#8217;ll establish healthy habits that will take off the pounds &#8211; and help you keep them off forever. </p>
<p>Secondly, decide just how much help you need. What motivates you? Are you a private person by nature, or do you do best with a lot of social support? Are you a strong-willed person who can decide to do something and &#8216;just do it&#8217;, or will you need help overcoming temptation? </p>
<p>If you thrive on social motivation, joining a weight loss program like Weight Watchers or TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) might be the best option for you. You&#8217;ll have social support, motivational rewards and weekly check-ins to help you stay on track and give you goals to aim for. </p>
<p>Next, do you do best with regimented, strict instructions that tell you exactly what you should do step by step, or are you happiest and more comfortable with a little flexibility? </p>
<p>If you do best when you have strict guidelines to follow and like routines, then look for a diet that gives you daily menus with precise measurements and foods to eat. While that may feel restrictive to many people, the trick is to do what works for you. In fact, once you reach your target weight, you can subscribe to a healthy eating or living magazine that has daily menus. </p>
<p>If restrictive diets and inflexible menus aren&#8217;t for you, then try a diet that gives you the option of mixing and matching your meals within certain parameters. Whether you count carbs, calories or exchanges, a diet like the Atkins, Weight Watchers or the Zone diet gives you some flexibility within the prescribed &#8216;allowed foods&#8217;. </p>
<p>Finally, how much weight do you have to lose? How long have you been trying to lose it? Will quick results keep you motivated, or is slow-and-steady progress all you really need? </p>
<p>Try a Quick-start with the Atkins diet to strip off the early weight &#8211; a lot of it water weight &#8211; quickly so that you will see results immediately. When your results from such restrictive eating are slow, pick up the activity by adding a little more exercise and vary your diet a little &#8211; but count your calories and carbs. Aim for a steady 1-2 pounds per week, but if you need an extra boost, drop back to a more restrictive pattern to give your metabolism a little kick. The trick is to never stay with an extremely low calorie diet long enough to slow your metabolism. Just drop down and pick up the activity level long enough to wake yourself up again.</p>

<p>Sears suggests that the major cause of obesity is an imbalance of insulin in the body. He maintains that the diet currently recommended by most medical institutions is high in carbohydrates and low in fats &#8211; a combination which he contends contributes to the production of too much insulin, and results in obesity. </p>
<p>The Zone Diet is based on the concept of achieving a physiological state in which insulin and eicosanoids, two hormones, are maintained in zones that are carefully balanced. By controlling the balance of insulin and eicosanoids, you increase the loss of fat, and decrease the likelihood of heart disease and diabetes, decrease inflammation and increase blood flow, and increase your physical and mental stamina. </p>
<p>The Zone Diet </p>
<p>The diet program of The Zone is designed to balance your intake of protein and carbohydrate at 1 part protein to 4 parts carbohydrate. It advises a moderate intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fat in order to control insulin. It prescribes a maximum amount of low-fat protein at one meal at 3-4 ounces, which is nearly exactly the recommendation of the USDA and the FDA. The majority of carbohydrates on the Zone diet come from vegetables and fruits, with limited amounts of bread, rice, potatoes and grains. Most fat intake should be from monounsaturated fats like olive oil, safflower oil and other &#8216;heart healthy&#8217; oils. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What are you willing to do to achieve your weight loss goals?</p>
<p>I’m approached quite regularly about which diet is best, which<br />
book would I recommend and what exercise program should a<br />
person follow.  People think they can just purchase a book to<br />
read and then some sort of magic occurs whereby reading it<br />
will cause their fat to magically disappear.  Well, I’m here<br />
to break the news to you, the $40 investment in your weight<br />
loss book is just the start, there’s a lot of hard work and<br />
other expenses involved. </p>
<p>Time Investment</p>
<p>There’s time invested in your education (reading, watching<br />
videos etc), time you’ll spend exercising doing both cardio<br />
and weight training.  There’s time spent creating your new<br />
meal plans as well as preparation of those meals the day<br />
before or days in advance.  There’s time involved in doing<br />
extra laundry because you’re suddenly doing more exercising<br />
now on your weight loss journey.</p>
<p>Let me ask you this:  What’s your favorite television show?<br />
How much television are you watching in a given week? 1 Hour?<br />
Six?  Are you willing to eliminate television to allow<br />
yourself time to go to the gym and prepare foods for the next<br />
day?  If not, then don’t bother buying books that recommend<br />
food and exercise programs?  It takes time to prepare food for<br />
5 or 6 meals in a day and to go to the gym once or twice a<br />
day. Weight loss requires a time investment.</p>
<p>Food Investment</p>
<p>The quality of the food you put in your body is directly<br />
proportional to the quality of your cells.  It’s your cells<br />
that create energy and make your various bodily systems run,<br />
and if they’re given the best quality food, then they’re able<br />
to regenerate and be healthy.</p>
<p>Conversely, low quality food creates a low quality cell.  A<br />
low quality cell is not up to the demand of generating energy<br />
nor the proper removal of wastes which then results in<br />
sickness and disease.</p>
<p>In conversation with a fellow regarding his food program and<br />
how he could make corrections to his diet to improve his<br />
health, burn fat, improve his workouts and achieve his weight<br />
loss goal, I suggested a few “new” products.  Oatmeal, some<br />
whole grain wraps, spring mix salad, and Essential Fatty Acid,<br />
Almond butter and whole grain basmati rice were a few places<br />
to begin. </p>
<p>“You didn’t tell me how expensive it was going to be!” was his<br />
response.</p>
<p>Well, I don’t consider it expensive, so I would not have said<br />
that it was.  </p>
<p>Our cells are our power plants in our body.  Our body is<br />
constantly rebuilding itself daily and hourly.  Our skeleton<br />
replaces itself once a year and the muscular lining of our<br />
stomach and our intestines is replaced every 3 to 4 days so it<br />
only makes sense to give it the highest quality food.  Doesn’t<br />
it?</p>
<p>You’re probably going to come to the same conclusion that most<br />
other people do.  The food I put in my body creates a healthy<br />
body and I must take care in my food choices.</p>
<p>Whole grain oatmeal costs more money than cocoa puffs.  Raw<br />
almonds cost more than hickory smoked almonds and you probably<br />
never knew what Essential Fats or Pro Biotics were. Weight<br />
loss requires an investment in food.</p>
<p>Cutting Expenses To Reach Your Goal</p>
<p>If you’re not able to increase the amount of food you eat<br />
financially or the quality of the food you eat (organic), then<br />
what are you willing to do to get it.  Are you willing to cut<br />
some other costs?  Are you willing to increase your sales at<br />
your job or home business to be able to afford this new<br />
change?  The first reasonable step is to make some switches or<br />
replacements.  Take note of non nutritional foods in your day<br />
- consider snacks, junk foods, coffee, pop, cigarettes (I hope<br />
you’re not still smoking), milk or dairy products, alcohol,<br />
vitamins, tums, Rolaids, pepto bismol etc and see how much<br />
you’re spending on a daily or monthly basis.  Are you willing<br />
to replace these for higher quality nutritional foods that<br />
will support you in your weight loss goals?  It can be a scary<br />
thought for some people. Others accept the challenge readily<br />
because they’ve truly committed to their weight loss goals and<br />
are willing to do Whatever It Takes!  Switching and replacing<br />
is the easiest thing to do. Weight Loss requires sacrifice.</p>
<p>Invest in Yourself</p>
<p>Your body, your mind, your soul and becoming the best you can<br />
be is the single best investment you can make.  Make the<br />
decision to eat the cleanest food you can, make the healthiest<br />
choices you can, begin to switch from non nutritional foods to<br />
nutritional foods and let go negativity in your life.  Weight<br />
loss is easy, but requires some investment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I hit my goal weight and moved to the Weight Watchers Maintenance Program. I&#8217;ve been thinking about it a lot as I continue to do my best to follow the program, and wondering how it is I was able to lose nearly 33 pounds in 8 months. So, I decided to write my Top 10 Strategies. I&#8217;ll list them Dave Letterman style.</p>
<p>Top 10 Weight Watchers Weight Loss Strategies That Worked for Me</p>
<p>10. I make sure to have lots of 1 and 2 point treats in the house. I work at home and I&#8217;ve learned that I like to snack and nibble during the day so it&#8217;s important to have low point treats available so I don&#8217;t feel guilty.</p>
<p>9. I let other people know (my friends, family and colleagues) what I&#8217;m working on so they can support me and give me kudos when I succeed.</p>
<p>8. I share my success and challenges on a blog (http://www.slim-people.com). This has been a great outlet for me to focus myself on what I need to keep doing, reading and thinking about in order to stay on track.</p>
<p>7. I use the Weight Watchers online etools. I&#8217;m a nut for details so the online program is great for me. I work at home and sit in front of a computer all day. It&#8217;s no problem for me to add my food immediately to the online points tracker. I also enter my weight every Saturday after my weekly Weight Watchers meeting. I get an immediate visual representation of how I&#8217;m going as I view the graph.</p>
<p>6. I attend the weekly Weight Watchers meetings without fail. I think in 8 months I&#8217;ve only missed two due to being out of town on business and unable to get to a meeting. Though, when I know I&#8217;m going to be out of town, I will usually at the very least go the day before and weigh in.</p>
<p>5. I weigh and measure my food. I learned quickly that what my eye thinks is 2 ounces usually is a lot more. I&#8217;m not consistent about this but more often than not I do weigh or measure what I&#8217;m eating and drinking.</p>
<p>4. I track my points. I write down what I eat. I hear Flora in my head saying, &#8220;You bite it, you write it.&#8221; I&#8217;ve learned that when I slack off from writing everything down, I either don&#8217;t lose or I gain weight that week. Again, my eyes are not a good judge of quantity.</p>
<p>3. I work out 4 times per week. Before Weight Watchers I took Pilates classes 3 times per week. Though I was getting stronger, I was not losing weight. In fact I was gaining weight due to hormones, a sedentary job and eating too much. I switched to 2 days of Pilates and 2 days of cardio workout. I started the cardio workout the same day I joined Weight Watchers and I know it has make a big difference. Last week I even started walking to my Pilates studio since it&#8217;s only a 10 minute walk. Up until now I&#8217;ve been driving, if you can believe that.</p>
<p>2. I have a buddy. My dear friend and I joined Weight Watchers together, as well as joined the gym together. We go to the meetings together. We work out 2 times per week together. We talk about food and how we&#8217;re doing all the time. We evangelize about Weight Watchers. Without my buddy I don&#8217;t think I would have stayed with the program. No, I know I would not have stayed with the program.</p>
<p>1. And number 1. I made the decision to join Weight Watchers. I had heard a lot of success stories about Weight Watchers and after putting on 30 pounds over the course of 3 years, I decided it was time to take action. I had been telling myself it was age and hormones that contributed to the weight gain and that may be partly true, but I had to take action and do something so I could feel good about myself, my body and my health.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s it. There are probably more things that could be added to this list. Now my challenge goal is to maintain for 6 weeks and get to Lifetime Member.</p>
<p>Oh, I just remembered one more thing I did. I read an article, I think on Weight Watchers Online, about rewarding yourself when you do well. So I set up a savings account and deposited $10 every time I lost a pound. I call it the &#8220;Pamper Me&#8221; account. Now, I will add $10 every week I maintain my weight. Then, eventually, I&#8217;ll do something wonderful to pamper myself!</p>
